Sang Penari , or the Dancer , is a story about the meeting of traditional culture with the growing politics of indonesia , how does the impact of modern times blend with the ancient tradition of the old times .
It was haunting , eerily haunting .I dont know much about cinematography , but the way that they shoot the movie was GORGEOUS .
Especially the final scenes , where it shows how important it is for us to stand our ground and to actually understand the situation not just because everyone else does that or because our society say so . And the ending was just breathtaking , it is bittersweet . How Rassun , the male protagonist and Srintil , the female protagonist , has to sacrifice their love.
And it comes to one question :
“Do you rather choose the one you love but have to let go what you love to do , or do what you love but not to be with the one you love ? ”
I think Rasus know if Srintil stays with him , she won’t be the same . Because her life is ronggeng . If she doesn’t do that anymore , she is not Srintil anymore . That’s why he choose to let her go , and Surti choose to do what she loves , and how she keeps dancing and dancing .
But is that a real happiness ?
I think this movie show us how we can’t have it all , and sometimes we have to choose what’s good , and what’s better . To be aware of our surrounding , to honor our culture , and to thinkfar .
This is the summary of Sang Penari
Young teenagers Rasus and Srintil fall in loved amidst living in poverty in their small, poor village of Dukuh Paruk in 1960s. Srintil is blessed with her dancing moves said to have certain magic. Many elderly believe that Srintil is destined to be a ronggeng (prime dancer), which means she belongs to the entire village. This makes Rasus feel robbed of his love to Srintil, and in the middle of his despair, he leaves the village to join the army force. As time goes by, Rasus is torn between abdicating himself to the country, or to pursue his love to Srintil, until a big political coup separates the two. Will their undying passion to each other survive the great tragedy?
This movie was directed by Ifa Isfansyah , written by Salman Aristo and Shanty Harmayn - based on a story by Ahmad Tohari . Played by Prisia Nasution , Oka Antara , Slamet Rahardjo , and many other brilliant actors and actresses .
This movie was also nominated for nine awards on Indonesian Film Festival , and won four of them .
